Board Member Spotlight: Lowell Flanders

Where do you work? What is your job title and what do you do?

I work at the Mütter Museum of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. I’m the Collections Manager and Registrar, so I’m responsible for most aspects of collections care such as acquisitions, loans, and any transactions that fall outside of those, as well as other typical collections tasks.

 What have you read lately?

My favorite thing I’ve read lately is probably “Babel: Or the Necessity of Violence” by R.F. Kuang. It’s not flawless but as a work of ‘historical science-fiction,’ it was compelling. It uses a (very slightly) altered history to explore the nature of British imperialism. You can read some associations with historical collecting practices into it easily.

Why did you join the Museum Council?

I joined the Museum Council because I wanted to be more involved in the Philadelphia museum community. Previously, I had only worked with larger organizations that were not concerned with issues specific to area museums.

What are you excited about right now?

I’m excited to continue working for the Museum Council and to attend our 2025 programming. I’m also diving into another year with a lot to accomplish at the museum, much of which will be interesting and rewarding.
