The Museum Council of Greater Philadelphia is a volunteer-run nonprofit organization that builds connections between and among the diverse museum and cultural community, provides opportunities for professional growth, shares best practices, and promotes accomplishments in the field.

As the largest museum-focused membership organization in Greater Philadelphia, Museum Council leads the charge with innovative programs, events, and networking opportunities for the museum community and the individuals who support it.

The Museum Council is looking for several arts and culture professionals to fill vacant seats on the Board of Directors. All work with the board is completed through unpaid and voluntary support. Board Terms are two years long with opportunities for extension.

The following application asks for basic information. At the end, you will be prompted to submit a cover letter and a resume/CV. If interested, please submit your application by May 6, 2024. All applicants will be notified of their status by May 31, 2024. Please reach out to info@philamuseumcouncil.org with any questions.

The nominating Committee will compile a group of the best-qualified individuals and the slate of individuals will be voted on during the Annual Meeting on June 13, 2024. Those accepted will be expected to attend the meeting.

Qualifications:

All applicants for consideration of being Members of the Museum Council of Greater Philadelphia Board of Directors must meet the minimum qualifications:

  • Must be a current individual or business/industry member

  • Will work with committees to advance Museum Council goals and mission

  • Attend regularly scheduled board meetings

  • Attend Museum Council and other industry events as a representative of the Museum Council board

Please note, only those positions which are currently open for the 2024-2026 board term are listed below. All positions carry a 2-year term, renewable for another 2-year term (4 years total).

Vice President (1-2 positions available)
Assist the President in planning the Annual Meeting, scheduling board meetings, and stand in and run board meetings when the President is unable to attend. Promote Museum Council within the Philadelphia-area cultural field and help ensure financial responsibility and sustainability for the organization. Support committee chairs and President with initiatives and events as needed. Secure sponsorships for events as needed. Attend professional and networking events representing the Museum Council.

Treasurer
Responsible for working with board officers and committee chairs to prepare the annual budget. Reconcile monthly accounts against bank activity. Expected to monitor and report on operating statements at each board meeting. Signer on all financial accounts. Receive and disburse payments to and from Museum Council in a timely fashion. File taxes annually.

Programming Chair

The Programming Chair manages the committee responsible for planning events, such as Behind-the-Scenes tours, panel discussions, and member-exclusive events. With President and Vice-President(s), secure venues and catering for events. Identify and build relationships with museums in Philadelphia for future programming and partnerships.

Membership Chair
Schedule and lead Membership Committee Meetings. Support all Museum Council events through membership registration and ensure committee involvement. Monitor trends in membership & plan periodic membership campaigns accordingly. Organize and spearhead member events and initiatives throughout the year. Maintain Membership databases and process incoming applications. Support Annual Meeting through annual membership campaign. Serve as point of contact for all membership inquiries.

Emerging Museum Professionals (EMP) Chair
Work in tandem with Programming Chair to plan and execute programs that specifically target, support, and advocate for emerging professionals in the field. With help of committee, coordinate and oversee annual mentorship program. Budget, plan, and execute events and initiatives for emerging professionals as needed. Coordinate with Marketing and Programming Chairs to ensure that events are strategically spaced throughout the year and properly marketed.

At-Large Member (1-2 positions available)
Directors are voting members of the Board of Directors and are expected to help fulfill the vision and mission of the Museum Council by attending board meetings, joining committees, and representing the Museum Council at events and other networking opportunities.
