The Museum Council of Greater Philadelphia is a volunteer-run nonprofit organization that builds connections between and among the diverse museum and cultural community, provides opportunities for professional growth, shares best practices, and promotes accomplishments in the field.

As the largest museum-focused membership organization in Greater Philadelphia, Museum Council leads the charge with innovative programs, events, and networking opportunities for the museum community and the individuals who support it.

The Museum Council is looking for several arts and culture professionals to fill vacant seats on the Board of Directors. All work with the board is completed through unpaid and voluntary support. Board Terms are two years long with opportunities for extension.

The following application asks for basic information. At the end, you will be prompted to submit a cover letter and a resume/CV. If interested, please submit your application by May 8, 2026. All applicants will be notified of their status by June 5, 2026. Please reach out to info@philamuseumcouncil.org with any questions.

The nominating Committee will compile a group of the best-qualified individuals and the slate of individuals will be voted on during the Annual Meeting in June 2026. Those accepted will be expected to attend the meeting.

OPEN POSITIONS

President

Lead the Museum Council board and provide strategic oversight to all programs and initiatives to further the mission. With Program Chair, plan and run the Annual Meeting, including a presentation on the past year. With the VP and Secretary, schedule and run board meetings every two months and annual board recruitment. Promote Museum Council within the Philadelphia-area cultural field and help ensure financial responsibility and sustainability for the organization. Support committee chairs with initiatives and events as needed. Attend Museum Council events and external events representing the Museum Council. 

Vice President 

Assist the President in planning the Annual Meeting, scheduling board meetings every two months, and stand in and run board meetings when the President is unable to attend. Promote Museum Council within the Philadelphia-area cultural field and help ensure financial responsibility and sustainability for the organization. Support committee chairs and the President with initiatives, events, and grant-making opportunities as needed. Secure sponsorships for events as needed. Represent the Museum Council when attending professional and networking events.

Secretary

Maintain Museum Council records and procedures, including taking and distributing board meeting minutes and agendas via Zoom and Google Drive. Monitor info email account, answering inquiries and forwarding to appropriate officers and/or committee chairs. Work with President and VP to assess board availability and assume responsibility for scheduling bi-monthly board meetings and communicating meeting dates to board members.

Membership Chair

Lead Museum Council membership, a significant driver of professional networking and revenue, through member communications, stewardship, and renewals. Support all Museum Council events through membership registration, and plan initiatives in collaboration with the Programming Chair to foster a sense of community among members. Maintain membership data and conduct membership renewals, lapsed member outreach, and new member growth. Support Annual Meeting through annual membership campaign. Serve as point of contact for all membership inquiries, and communicate with members via quarterly newsletters. Schedule and lead Membership Committee Meetings.

Communications Chair

Work with Social Media Chair & committee members to manage content and branded graphics to grow audiences for the Museum Council, including the website and email outreach, both via SquareSpace. Support the Programming and EMP Chairs with online event registration and event promotions. Assist Social Media Chair as needed by taking photos and videos to document Museum Council events.

Social Media Chair

Work with Communications Chair & marketing committee members to manage content and branded graphics to grow audiences for the Museum Council on social media (Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn). Post regularly on social media to promote events, Museum Council initiatives, and local museum activities. With support of the Communications Chair, other officers, and committee chairs, take photos and videos to document Museum Council events.

Emerging Museum Professionals (EMP) Chair

Work in tandem with the Programming Chair to plan and execute programs that specifically target, support, and advocate for emerging professionals in the field. With help of committee, coordinate and oversee annual mentorship program. Budget, plan, and execute a maximum of 2 events and initiatives for emerging professionals. Coordinate with Marketing and Programming Chairs to ensure that events are strategically spaced throughout the year and properly marketed.

At-Large (2-3 open positions)

At- Large board members are voting members of the Board of Directors and are expected to help fulfill the vision and mission of Museum Council by attending board meetings, participating in board initiatives, joining committees, and representing Museum Council at events and other networking opportunities.
