Guidelines for Writing Job Descriptions

Agree on a realistic expectation—and description for this position.

We strongly encourage you to accept relevant experience alongside any degree requirements. This type of requirement exclude those who were unable to obtain a degree for financial reasons but instead worked in related fields. Job requirements should not have barriers to those who chose or needed to work instead of pursuing higher education.

Why pay for internships?

Unpaid internships works against our collective drive to make our institutions and field more diverse. Unpaid positions narrows the pool of applicants not by skill, experience or desire to work for you—but by economic means. Only those who can afford to, will apply to and take on unpaid internships.

Why disclose the salary?

There are a number of reasons why you should be transparent about salary.

This helps narrow your applicant pool from the very beginning to high-quality applicants who are aware of the rate. The job hunt is time-consuming and expensive for both the employer and prospective employee. According to the Society of Human Resource Management, employers spend an average of $4,129 to fill a vacant position. Your time and money could be focused on evaluating quality applicants that informed about compensation from the very beginning. Posting an accurate salary range will help both sides avoid wasting time on jobs or candidates they cannot afford.

You should include salary because people will find it elsewhere. Glassdoor will post estimated salary ranges, even if the description doesn’t include it. And the this google spreadsheet has made pay data (and disparities) visible for all.

Why include the name and title of the person to whom candidates should address applications?

Again, you are being transparent with your applicants. You also make the application process easier by being clear about who to address in applications, resumes, and cover letters.

Why include details about the hiring process from application to training, including information like the interview format?

By detailing the application process, you set those applying and interviewing up to perform better. Giving a clear picture of what to expect throughout the application process allows applicants to better prepare for interviews, gives them a better understanding of your timeline, and reduces the stress of the unknown.
